What is Pilates?

Pilates is a form of exercise that uses low-impact, controlled exercises to strengthen core muscles, joint mobility and body awareness. Developed by Joseph Pilates in the 20th Century, it has since gained popularity worldwide due to its effective workout of both body and mind.

6 Principles of Pilates

  1. Breath

  2. Concentration

  3. Control

  4. Precision

  5. Centre

  6. Flow

Types of Pilates

While Pilates is based around these 6 Principles, there are many types of Pilates class to choose from. Mat Pilates, Reformer Pilates, Equipment Pilates will all give you a different style, and picking the right class for you will depend on your personal goals and preference.

What to expect in a Mat Pilates class?

Joseph Pilates created a sequence of 34 exercises that form the foundation of Mat Pilates classes, that you can download below.

Some classes called ‘Classical Mat’ classes will only use the 34 exercises. Most Mat Pilates classes are derived from these exercises, meaning that they use these exercises as a basis to form the class.

All Mat Pilates classes are led by a Pilates instructor who will vocally guide you through the movements, often alongside physical demonstrations. These will consist of body weight exercises and movements on the mat that will work all of your muscles in isolation as well as working your body as a whole. Sometimes instructors will include small equipment like bands, balls and foam rollers to enhance the movements.

Through these slow and controlled exercises, Mat Pilates will improve your strength, mind-body connection and mobilise your joints.

What to wear for my first Mat Pilates class?

Clothes you feel comfortable in. You will be moving your body, so it’s important that your clothes don’t restrict your movement.

There is no ‘right’ thing to wear; what’s most important is that you are comfortable.

What to bring to my first Mat Pilates class?

At Yellow Pilates, we provide bespoke Pilates Mats for you to practise on, so you do not need to worry about bringing your own.

However, most other Mat Pilates classes will require you to bring your own Pilates mat - so make sure you look at the studio you’d like to attend specifically and consider investing in a Pilates Mat.

Bring a bottle of water! Stay hydrated during classes. You will certainly be working your body.

What to expect after my first Mat Pilates class?

Sometimes your first Pilates class can feel like a lot to take in, but there is no such thing as getting it all ‘right’. Don’t worry about the details to begin with - allowing your body to move is enough. Often, it takes 3 or more classes for Pilates to really start to ‘click.’

Your body will feel great! You will be energised and invigorated and…ready for more! See you on the mat.
