What to Expect From Your First Equipment Pilates Class:

When booking your first Pilates Equipment class, it's natural to feel a bit apprehensive. If you have never been to a class or studio like this, it can be unclear what to expect, especially if you are new to Pilates. But don’t worry—by the end of this blog, you’ll have a clear understanding of what your first session will involve, and you'll feel more at ease as you step into your first Pilates equipment class.

At Yellow Pilates, we recommend all new clients keen to explore Equipment Pilates start with a Private 1-to-1 session with our Founder, Michelle. This lasts about 70 minutes and is a crucial step in tailoring your Pilates experience to your unique needs and goals. Michelle is extremely friendly and approachable, and is sure to put you at ease right away.

We offer all new clients an introductory offer of 3 x Studio Equipment classes for £90. Find out more.

Your Initial Consultation:

At the start of this session, Michelle will conduct a thorough consultation to discuss your objectives, review your movement patterns, and explore any injuries or medical conditions you may have. This process is entirely judgement-free and serves as a foundation for understanding what’s best for your body.

Michelle will also perform a movement and postural analysis, taking detailed notes on your current habits. This analysis helps kickstart the conversation about how we can work together to achieve your goals.

Exploring the Equipment:

After your consultation, it’s time to get acquainted with the Pilates equipment. We typically start with some basic mat exercises, especially if you’re new to Pilates. Michelle will guide you through the movements using visual and audio cues. These exercises might include:

  • Pelvic curls

  • Breathing exercises

  • Hip rolls

  • Moving the pelvis & spine in four-point kneeling position

  • Lat pulls with body weight

If any of these positions are uncomfortable for you, don't worry—we can adapt them as needed.

From there, we’ll begin exploring the various Pilates equipment. This first session serves as a fact-finding mission for both you and Michelle. You’ll get a taste of different apparatus like the Cadillac, the Reformer, the Wunda Chair, and the Ladder Barrel. We’ll assess what feels good, identify any differences in strength or mobility between the left and right sides of your body, and pinpoint what might need extra attention.

What Comes Next?

By the end of your first session, we aim to have a clear picture of what your personalised Pilates program could look like, taking into account both your short-term and long-term goals.

After this initial session, you’ll have the option to continue with Private 1-to-1 sessions, join small group equipment classes, or perhaps try a mat class. We’ll discuss these options in detail and work with you to develop a plan that aligns with your goals and lifestyle.
